오렌지 스웨터 : 봤어? 장그래 왔던데.
남자 1 : 정말?
남자 2 : 정말?
오렌지 스웨터 : 응. 어디 취직했나 봐. 양복 입고 왔어.
남자 1 : 와, 장그래. 여기 다시 안 올 줄 알았더니. 어떻게, 왔네?
남자 2 : 그러게.
♥Let’s Dive In with Literal Translations!
오렌지 스웨터 : 봤어? 장그래 왔던데?
the guy in the orange sweater : Did you see? Jang Geu-rae came.
★~던데(요)? : When you use '~던데(요)?' as an ending, you are expecting other people to respond to your comment. You can say what you experience, what you heard, or even your opinion.
▶ 샐리: 가나다 식당 어때요? (How is Ganada restaurant?)
수영: 괜찮던데요? (It was nice.)
샐리: 그래요? 저도 가봐야겠네요. (Is that so? I should try it too.)
남자 1 : 정말?
man 1 : Really?
남자 2 : 정말?
man 2 : Really?
오렌지 스웨터 : 응. 어디 취직했나 봐. 양복 입고 왔어.
the guy in an orange sweater : Yeah, it seems like he got a job somewhere(some place). He came here dressed in a suit.
★ 어디: somewhere
The main meaning of '어디' is 'where'. However, it can also mean 'somewhere'. The same goes for 뭐(what, something), 누구(who, someone), 언제(when, some time).
★취직하다: to get a job
★ verb + 나 보다: This ending can be used when you are talking about something that you are guessing or are aware of roughly.
▶ 학생들이 많네요. 지금 학교에 가나 봐요. (There are a lot of students. I guess they are going to school now.)
★ 양복: suit
남자 1 : 와, 장그래. 여기 다시 안 올 줄 알았더니. 어떻게, 왔네?
man 1 : Wow, Jang Geu-rae. I thought he would never come here again. (But) somehow, he is here, huh?
★ verb + 줄 알았다 : I thought.../I knew it would be...
'verb + 줄 알았다' has a couple of slightly different meanings but in this lesson, let's focus on 'I thought.../I knew it would be...'. You can also say 'verb + 줄 몰랐다', which means 'I didn't think/I didn't know...'.
▶ 수영 씨, 영어 잘하는 줄 몰랐어요! (Sooyoung, I didn't know you were fluent in English!)
▶ 그렇게 말할 줄 알았어! (I knew you were going to say that!)
★ 어떻게: As you probably know, 어떻게 means 'how'. However, in this context, 어떻게 means 'somehow' with a hint of being surprised.
남자 2 : 그러게.
man 2: I know, right?
★ 그러게(요) : This expression is often used when you are agreeing with the other person. You will also hear '그러게 말이다(=그러게 말이에요)' as well.
▶수영: 요즘 날씨가 왜 이렇게 더워요? (Why is the weather so hot recently?)
샐리: 그러게 말이에요. (I know, right?)
